Just a reminder that the annual Tuchux Charity tournament will be held on Aug. 7, 2008 (THURSDAY OF WAR WEEK) In addition to the standard tourney we have a few items that have been generously donated that we will be holding a silent auction for. Come by and fight, come by and watch, come bid on items! 100% of all donations will be given to Susan G. Koman for Breast Cancer research.

Gentles,

This is the final update for the Drag Race at war.

Please spread this information as widely as possible. I will try to get the Independent to publish the information on this function, but they may or may not publish it.

There will be a drag race at war. This will be a function to raise money that will be donated to the Women's Center of Beaver County. The Women's Center of Beaver County is in no way associated with this endevour, and probably has never heard of it.

The idea is this. One Wednesday of War Week at Pennsic War 37 (August 6th, 2007) there will be a race. This will be a walk/run along a predetermined route with a five dollar entry fee. Each runner is required to wear clothing that is inappropriate to their gender. In the interests of maximizing donations Kilts are considered inappropriate for both genders. You CAN wear them. They count.

The Race will begin at the top of the hill in the parking lot shortly after dark. There will be a table or blanket there, as well as a sign in sheet, and a donation box.

The route will be down the main road from the parking lot, down through the main serengetti encampment, up horde hill, through the Confed encampment, across a foot bridge, and into the Clovenshield encampment.

Dreadlord Nissan Maxima of Clovenshield has pledged umbrella drinks for all runner who complete the course.

The fastest runner will be named "The Pennsic 37 Protector of Women". the runner (or walker) who raises the most money will be named "the Pennsic 37 Champion of Ladies".

Because the term "registered sex offender" is hard to wash off, all participants are required to conform to public decency laws.

Because the route is irregular, and the roads are rough, all runners and walkers are encouraged to wear good, safe running shoes. Sorry, Boys, pumps are right out.

This is just an FYI for those of you who’ve been emailing me, asking if I would take photos for you while at Pennsic this year.

As of this Pennsic I am now an official merchant. Every year I am asked to photograph special events, portraits and sometimes even weddings. As of this year you will be able to hire me to do some of this work. I will still go about taking my range of usual Pennsic photos for free. I will also still be posting the web galleries as in the past. If you have an event, or want some portraits done you will be able to hire me, schedule permitting.

I will be merchanting with Mystic Mail, the only internet cafe on site. It's right behind the church near the food court. I will most likely not be there when you stop by (I'll be out taking photos). They will have my calendar and can tell you if I am available for a shoot. If I am, you'll leave your contact info and I will get in touch with you to schedule said shoot.

I will process all the Pennsic photos ASAP after Pennsic and get them online. All customers will then be mailed a CD or DVD data disk with the purchased images.

Rates will be posted at Mystic Mail.

Oh, and yes, to answer some of the inquiries I've had about the Pennsic calendars. There will be a new one for sale this year. I made a LOT less of them, so be sure to get them while you can. last year's was more about the performers. This year's features more of the battles.

My first story falls under the category of some people being stupid to the point of it becoming hilarious.

Deer Crossing: (from Kingman , KS)

I live in a semi-rural area. We recently had a new neighbor call the local township administrative office to request the removal of the Deer Crossing sign on our road.

The reason:

"Too many deer are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore."
Unbelievable...
The Green Fairy Party will be at Pentwyvern, E16, on Thursday of War Week, August 7th, around 8pm till we drop. Requirements are the usual; You (and a guest) must bring some absinthe either store bought or home made. This is a social tasting.

Please note: Due to lack of cargo space this year (we had to trade our van in for a smaller car) I will not be bringing the mass amounts of glassware. Please bring your own glass (rocks style glass or parfait glasses work the best). I am hoping to get to the store and serve the usual fruit, breads, cheese, etc. But if you'd like to bring something (think wine tasting foods) you are more than welcome.

I am selling my marquee tent as it is time to upgrade to something more conducive to my needs. Here are the details:
9' x 12' Panther Primitives Marquee
Flame Retardant canvas
Sod flap on all walls
Walls are 6' high
Tent has 12' peek
Dag braids are standard and in pacific blue
There is no longer a ground cloth
All poles, ropes and stakes are included
In addition 4 poles have been drilled and have hooks to instal an 8' long clothing bar
There are two hooks for lanterns/cloaks on center poles

This tent is now 8 years old. That said I have reduced the price quite a bit from what I paid for it. The canvas is still in excellent condition. I am asking $900 for everything.

The tent has just been cleaned very well. There is a recent picture of it in my pictures. Please note the Tigger and Pooh decorations are not included, nor is my child.

This tent can be available on land grab Saturday for any interested party as I am not using it this year. So if interested send word my way. :) And see you all soon.

If interested please e-mail me at captain_una@yahoo.com

Our camp has all sorts of stuff that I only use at pennsic and it occures to me that rather than hauling all this stuff back and forth between home and pennsic I could just get a good weather tight trailer and keep all that crap on site. I know other people do this. I was wondering who I need to talk to and how much does it cost (I can only assume the Coopers charge for this)

At this point this is only a thought. I'd need to get myself the weather tight trailer before I did that and it's not really in the budget between now and next week when Pennsic starts, but I figured if someone could tell me who to talk to this year about it then maybe next year I could make that my project.

I have kind of gotten myself into something.

It's well, it's silly. But it's for a good cause.

here is the cross posted announcement.

******************************************************

Your Excellency, please split this thread. Please entitle the new thread "Drag race at Pennsic"

OK, guys, from the inspiration of an honored person from the archive, I have decided to do a "stupid" fund raiser at Pennsic this coming year.

I am sorry that this has taken so long to come to you, but the intended charity is the Women's Center of Beaver County. This is a battered woman's shelter that is

Quote:

Based on the firm belief that all individuals have the right to live free from violence, the Women's Center is committed to promoting safety and independence with the goal to reduce and eliminate the causes and effects of abuse. We strive to educate the public to provide shelter, counseling, support, advocacy, and education to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Source http://www.womenscenterbc.org/#numbers

Please note, I am in no way associated with the Women's Shelter of Beaver County, and, quite frankly, they have never heard of me. It would just be cool if a lady showed up and gave then a hundred bucks or so, and maybe a humorous video tape.

OK, now, the way this is going to work.

There will be a race, at some non-obnoxious time, from one place to another, at Pennsic. At this point, it looks like it will be from the camp of the Magnificent Eastrealm to the camp of the Mighty Midrealm. This has not yet been determined, and for a fee, the race can (or can not) run through/past your camp.

Each runner must be wearing clothing inappropriate to their gender. That's why it's called a drag race. If women want to run in men's clothing, that's cool, but it is suggested that they run in clothing that is somehow humorous. Really, really massive codpieces are suggested. There will be a minimum five dollar donation for each runner.

Each runner will solicit donors on their own, from their own sources. A central coordinator will be chosen by the board of directors (that would be Allejandro and freiman) tp receive all the money and mail or possibly hand deliver it to the Women's Center of Beaver County. The originator would like to suggest Fiona, at that time Queen of Drachenwald, but any person who is of demonstrated good character is acceptable.

In the interests of maximizing donations, kilts count as gender inappropriate for men for the purposes of the race.

The winner of the race will get to style themselves "Pennsic 37 protector of women"

The racer who garners the most actual cash delivered to the charity will get to style themselves "Pennsic 37 Champion of Ladies".

Anyway, that's the plan. I will run in a tutu, if somebody sews it for me. I can't sew. This is a lightweight thing. I would like to raise a couple of hundred bucks for a battered women's shelter. If you are up for it, or your squire is, please respond here. If nobody else is, then I am spared running through the streets in a tutu.

f

*************************************

thanks
freiman

... a hardboiled egg, cut in half lengthwise, with a saltine cracker stuck point first into the yolk of just one egg half.. this makes a cute little sailboat !!!

...cooked hotdoggs, with one end sliced lengthwise halfway down the hotdogg-four times...this makes eight 'tenticals'... and vola! you've got an octo-wienie!!!

...or maybe just core an apple, and fill the center with chunky style peanut butter... or maybe make a jack-o-lantern face in the cored apple first, before filling it with peanut butter..

i try to keep some cinnimin swirled in a tub of margerine or butter in the fridge... this way i can use some splenda to make quik and easy cinnimin toast...

Could this be a sign that the economy and the cost of gas have begun to have an effect on travel so that fewer people can afford to take the trip to Pennsic? I've heard some people say so. After all the years of growth and crowding, are we now in a decline where we'll have a lower population density in many parts of the camp? If so, it could certainly make land grab less stressful. What does this say for future years? Are people also doing less SCA travel locally? Perhaps this is just a sign of the times. Whadda YOU think??

PLEASE DO NOT SEND COMMENTS TO COMMENTS@SCA.ORG. I know what the auto-signature file at the bottom says, but comments sent to comments@sca.org will not get to Laurel and Wreath.

Instead, send comments to wreath-herald@sca.org.

Again, please send comments on this to wreath-herald@sca.org.

Thank you,
Patrick
President, SCA, Inc.

--
Greetings!

The following items were included on the Cover Letter that was issued this past weekend, with requests for comment from the populace of the SCA and not just the College of Arms. If these questions have not yet appeared on your kingdom's heraldic and/or your kingdom's main mailing list, please forward this email to those lists.

The decisions on these subjects will be made at the November 2008 Wreath meeting. Those who wish to comment but are not commenting members of the College of Arms (and thus unable to post to OSCAR), may send their commentary directly to wreath-herald@sca.org; those comments will then be posted verbatim to OSCAR. All comments submitted in this fashion should arrive by October 24, 2008. This will give the volunteers doing this manual copying sufficient time for their work.

Please address these questions separately, if at all possible.

1: Laurel Wreaths and Territorial Arms

Currently laurel wreaths are reserved for - and are a required component of - territorial arms. This topic has been a subject of debate many times. It has long been argued that the requirement that territorial arms have a laurel wreath as a prominent component of the arms is ahistoric. The counter-argument has been that it makes it easy to identify territorial groups which, while not a period practice, is very much part of SCA historical practice. We are considering removing the requirement that territorial arms have a laurel wreath and invite comments from the College of Arms and others.

2: Laurel Wreaths for Laurels

Currently laurel wreaths are reserved for territorial arms. A member of the Order of the Pelican may register armory with the symbol of the order, as may a member of the Order of the Chivalry. It has been suggested that members of the Order of the Laurel should also be allowed to registered armory with the symbol of their order. We request opinions on whether or not laurel wreaths should be reserved for members of the Order of the Laurel in addition to territorial arms. Please note that this decision is independent of the decision whether or not to remove the requirement that territorial arms include a laurel wreath. Regardless of the outcome of these two discussions, laurel wreaths will continue to be reserved for territorial arms.

- Istvan
...soon to be Wreath Sovereign of Arms

Comments are strongly encouraged and can be sent to:

Hello,

Once again, the Circus of the Damned will be unleashing a Plague upon Pennsic. Hopefully, the brave children of the Realm will follow in their predecesor's footprints, step up, and save Pennsic from this year's disaster. Our seers tell us that the omens point to Tuesday of War week (8/5/08) as being the day that this year's Horror will descend upon the Marketplace and Food Court. Any child helping to capture one of the troublesome beasties and turn it in at the Children's fete will receive a Royal Proclaimation and a prize. Keep a look out in the Pennsic Independant for more information!

Sincerely,
Rania Iskramor
Circus of the Damned

P.S. A little history for those parents new to Pennsic : The Circus of the Damned has run a large scale "scavenger hunt" for the children of Pennsic for the past two years. It has been so well received by the children and the visiting Monarchs, that we have embraced it as one of our House traditions.

In the wee hours of the moring on Tuesday, Gypsies sneak though the Market place and Food Court and strew little toy critters around on the paths. We try and continue to sneak around several times during the day on Tueday and early Wednesday, as well, to make sure there are plenty of critters to be found (last year, we made and "hid" over 500 viscious Vorpal Bunnies). Children are asked to find ONE beastie and bring it to the Children's fete to claim their due honors. If your child does not find a beastie on Tuesday, please come to the Fete on Wednesday... Gypsies are notoriusly bad zoo-keepers and we have MANY critters escape inside the fete itself.

We look forward to seeing all of you at the Children's Fete!

I wanted to let you know that MysticMail is now offering a service to teachers and students alike. For the past couple of years, several University teachers have left their handouts in electronic and/or hard copy form, and we've helped folks get additional copies when there weren't enough to go around. It's convenient because we are on site in the merchant area, and interested parties don't have to leave site. Two years ago, this idea started to catch on and so we wanted to formalize it to make it as easy to service as many folks as possible.

Teachers can upload their handouts at http://www.pennsic.net/mysticmail/Classes.html , walk in with hard copies or (preferably) electronic format during the war. We will keep these around electronically and when students/teachers come to us and ask for a hand out, we'll print it out for them and just charge them for the print out and not the computer time. (Teachers get a copy for free) I'm contacting you in the hopes that you will casually pass this information on to those who it will help as the war approaches.

Here's mine:

We are on site and taking part of an annual Pennsic tradition - the Sinking of the Dragon. Apparently evrey year we take a car shell and sink it to the bottom of the river (mind you the river is about the size of the Detroit River in my dream). What was weird about this car is that it was the little white piece of crap car that Dan Majerle (basketball player I went to college with) used to drive on campus. Dan is so tall that he took out the front seat and drove the car from the back seat - guess that was stuck in my subconscious.

" A compliment is like a fine gift, wrapped in words and given to you in appreciation for something you have done or a milestone you have reached... you are supposed to accept it with a gracious thank you... not rip it to pieces and throw it back in the givers face."

The SCA Inc. seeks applicants for the position of Chief Technical Officer, for a three-year term beginning August 15, 2008. This is a part-time volunteer position requiring technical leadership and a commitment of approximately 10-15 hours per week plus availability for emergencies. The CTO is a direct deputy to the President and Vice President of Operations, and reports indirectly to the Board of Directors by way of an Ombudsman.

The Chief Technical Officer (CTO) leads a team of volunteers who maintain and manage the SCA's Internet servers for web, email, and related infrastructure services. The CTO team manages the SCA's Internet domains, SSL certificates, and the technical aspects of e-commerce clearinghouse services, and similar aspects of the corporation's online identity. The SCA.org Webmaster reports to the CTO, as do several special project deputies. The CTO may also lead and direct external paid contractors for specific business critical projects or administrative duties.

This position requires specific project management, interpersonal and technical skills, including the following:

* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing, including documents and announcements that will be released for public perusal. This position also requires four detailed quarterly reports plus to the Society Seneschal and the Board, plus an annual (Domesday) report.
* Ability to interact constructively with non-technical clients who use the SCA's online services, including Society officers, Board members, and the SCA's corporate office team.
* Ability to lead a team of technical volunteers and/or paid contractors to support and enhance the SCA's Internet capabilities.
* Ability to interact with the Society Chronicler, Society Web Minister, and other corporate level officers to advise on policy issues related to information technology.
* Familiarity with the software components and technologies used on the SCA servers. The main components include a variety of technologies with Linux, Apache, GNU and PHP among them.
* Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of highly sensitive information.

Qualified applicants should have a technical college degree and at least ten years of experience in project management and information technology, or equivalent. Reliable high-speed Internet access, including while traveling, is essential, and ownership of a laptop computer is highly desirable.

The Chief Technical Officer leads and/or implements strategic projects on a largely self-directed basis or as requested by Society officers or the Board. He or she also will direct a technical team that corrects problems on the SCA servers, sometimes on an emergency basis.

The CTO team receives multiple daily reports from the servers, including status of important software systems, e-commerce summaries, and security bulletins. These reports need to be monitored on a daily or near-daily basis.

The time commitment of the CTO position is approximately ten hours per week normally, but can be considerably larger in the event of problems or major strategic project work.

Hey Folks,

Just informing y’all that the window is closing on a unique opportunity to make your mark on Pennsic and improve the experience for everyone else to boot.

We’re all excited to get to Pennsic for the first time; driving past the school busses, over the one lane bridge, up the hill and to the right…as we drive in we see all the camps getting set up on the right, and to the left we see…the snow fence.

This years autocrat, Isabella, has embarked on an ambitious project to deal with that one abrasive view on Pennsic’s front lawn. For a small donation of $5 your coat of arms, the arms of your camp or household, etc. will be hand painted on a pennant to be displayed in perpetuum on your drive into Pennsic.

They will make only one pennant for each Coat of Arms, so as to allow variation. Arms do not have to have been approved by the College of Heralds. However, if they have not been approved, they reserve the right to deny a request if the Arms are deemed offensive or inappropriate for the SCA.

“We are only producing a limited number of pennants, so it is first-come, first-served. The pennants will be triangle-shaped flags made from trigger cloth, measuring about 18 inches by 10 inches. The device will be roughly 8 inches square and painted on with acrylic paints. Pennants will be property of Pennsic, just like the shields on the fort.
To have your arms painted on a pennant, please email Isabella (mayor37@pennsicwar.org) with a jpg or drawing of your arms. The address to mail the $5 checks (made out to "SCA Inc., Pennsic") will be provided in an email response.”

The official deadline is this Sunday the 15th, but Isabella told me she could fudge the deadline by a little bit. If you’d like to become a permanent part of Pennsic here’s your chance … but you’d better hurry

>From the President, Patrick Anderson:

Earlier this year, I was asked by several people in the waterbearing community to examine the various laws of states and countries related to waterbearing as an organized and official activity of the SCA, Inc. Various states have informed officers of the SCA, Inc. that while our activity does not directly violate the food codes or health regulations of their states, if there were to be an outbreak of illness, the SCA, Inc. could be held liable for that outbreak. Several health care professionals and attorneys have reviewed this topic and agree with this assessment.

I was asked to examine the best way to both ensure a safe fighting environment for our fighters, and to comply with the various state and country laws. The relevant laws vary from state by state, county by county and country by country. I determined that the best way to do this would be to make “waterbearing” unofficial and unsanctioned by the SCA, Inc. and proposed this change to the Board. The only other option would be to regulate waterbearing, and to regulate it such that it follows the various food safety codes of the various states and countries the SCA participates in. This would be unwieldy, impractical and expensive for the SCA to do. Further, it is likely that waterbearers would not be able to continue to serve our fighters using any of the current methods of waterbearing.

The proposal put before the membership for comment would stop waterbearing by any SCA branch or other official group. The SCA would not have an office of waterbearer at any level. Marshals would still be permitted to allow waterbearers on the field, but any waterbearing must not be done by any officially sanctioned or regulated groups of the SCA. Households are welcome to provide water to fighters, as are unofficial and unrecognized “guilds”. This does not bar groups from putting out the "serve yourself water coolers" at events. (In my Kingdom they are usually the big orange cylinders.)

The Board and Corporate officers understand that many people have spent time waterbearing within the official framework, and now hope that you continue to volunteer unofficially. This proposal has been brought to enable fighters to continue to have a waterbearing service provided to them, without the extremely strict governance that official waterbearing will require.

The actual text of the proposed rule is below. This rule has not yet been approved by the Board, and is being sent out for comment here. The Directors request comments from the membership regarding this proposed revision no later than October 1st, 2008. Please send them to:
Thank you for commenting.

Patrick Anderson
President, Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc.

Proposed language to be added to Corpora:
The activity of providing beverages to combatants and spectators at SCA Combat activities is not regulated, warranted, organized, controlled, or sanctioned by the SCA, Inc. or any affiliate or subsidiary entity. All warrants, authorizations, or other formal recognition of this activity are by publication of this change revoked. This document does not either address or restrict such volunteer activity or the methods by which it occurs.

I used to go to a healthfood store and by all biodegradable bath products and detergents, but after I moved, I didn't live anywhere near such a store. So, my eco-habits the past few years have slipped a little. But here's some good news - you can now buy biodegradable body wash at just about any store. The brand Pure and Natural just came out with a new line of body wash and bar soaps that smell very nice. I just bought some today. Also, I'm pretty sure that Paul Mitchell hair products have been biodegradable for years.
You guys have any other ideas? What do you do?

Everyone is asked to bring a 750 mL bottle of their own brew to share although this is not absolutely mandatory. I've found lots of great resources and instructions online, but I'm stuck on one thing--the best place to buy the canvas for the roof. Panther has good prices per yard ($4.50), but I've sewn a tent from scratch before, and I really, Really don't want to have to sew the roof together. I'd far prefer to buy the roof already sewn together (a 20' by 20' peice with a center hole and rain flap) Does anybody know of any good resources for this??
Barring that...is anybody looking to sell a 14 or 16ft yurt before pennsic?
The invalidation of the reign of Middle Kingdom Crown and Consort Lutr and Tessa is one which has had ramifications across Kingdom borders and has emotionally affected many of our members. This action, though unfortunate, was necessary and was not made without serious deliberation.

There are a numbers of factors which the Board Members must take into consideration when faced with a situation such as occurred in the Middle Kingdom – Corpora and the organization’s history and precedent. The rules in the governing documents of the SCA requiring current, valid memberships for all Crowns and Consorts for the duration of their reigns are clear and concise. Likewise, precedent has been set in previous similar occurrences stretching back over twenty-five years. In each case, the penalty for such a lapse, regardless of cause, has been the same.

Please rest assured that the awards granted and honors given by Lutr and Tessa during their time on the thrones of the Middle Kingdom remain valid. The actions of the Board of Directors do not negate these awards.
SO - I've been making alterations of my own to garb, and at the last event, I got LOTS of comments from women who wanted to know where I'd gotten them... Now, I am asking the following question to those who may be interested:

If either easy-to-use patterns or pre-sewn garments were available for purchase, that were nursing-friendly, would you be interested in purchasing them?

Depending on the response, I'm seriously considering making both and offering them for sale through the SCA...
Visiting the Artisans' Forum & checking out the incredible projects. Wow!

Finding just the stones & crystals I wanted at market.

Falling into an afternoon nap in my tent, with a bagpipe lullabye in the distance.

And there is more, of course, but all mixed in with plenty of hugs and greetings. Finding that I ran into more people that I know, than I knew I knew.

Gees, I visited 5 fires in one night. Not many for some folks, but for me, yeah.

Oh, and how could I forget?? There were THREE rainbows on Saturday evening.

Hope you all had enjoyable times - regardless of the weather -- Lavender

(And to those of you who didn't/couldn't come === See ya at Pennsic!
