You decide two months out that you need all new garb for this year.

And it should all be hand sewn.

At least I have enough smocks that I don't need to make a bunch of them. (Last year was The Year of Many Smocks)

you start getting the "DO you think you'd have time to make me_______________(garb)?" phone calls

these usually start a month before pennsic even though they've all known what they wanted since LAST pennsic!

      LOL

... you start haunting local thrift stores in hopes that you'll find some perfect bit of carpet or shelves

... people who haven't kept in touch for a year suddenly email to make sure you'll be there

... your mundane friends stop calling and say they'll see you in a couple months

lol so I'm not the only one how tries to get used to cold showers... it's a good thing to prep yourself... ^_^

I take cold showers on a regular basis when the weather's hot. ;-) Not that there's been much of that so far this year. Here's hoping that Pennsic will have nice weather this year, neither too hot nor too cold, nor too anything else.

And I can actually get a hot shower at Pennsic. My campmates rock!

I start warmin' up my liver by drinking massive amounts of wine and staying up til 5am. (kidding!)
And I have decided that I hate ALL of my garb and want a whole new wardrobe.....Yeah, that ain't gonna happen.
              • Re: You know it's almost Pennsic when...

Also along with the liver warm up that Mel is doing , I am burning things in a bucket to give the smoke haze of a thousand campfires, playing constant looped tracks of drumbeats through the night and throwing a glass of water on myself before I go to bed to give myself that authentic Pennsic not a single dry article of clothing left feeling. If any of you attended last years Pennsic /monsoon or "Ponnzoon" you'll know exactly what I mean.

I think at one point last year, I saw woodland creatures starting to line up in pairs outside the pirate camp's replica ship , it rained that much....

No, nothing has beat Pennsic 23. It was so wet, camps left Pennsic because it was so muddy....no lie. I remember walking past a camp one day and the next day it was gone...OK, there was a pick up truck there loaded with camp stuff...

Last year was wet, but not like that year...last year there was sun every day, that year no sun, just damp, dark and wet.

And let's not forget Lake Serengeti(sp?) a couple years back.

There are certain undeniable truths about Pennsic (frequently all in the same day :) :

                    1. It will be hot
                    2. It will be cold
                    3. It will be wet
                    4. It will be dry

Check your stuff to make sure it can survive all elements. Come with a good attitude and just go with the flow - even if that flow is down Runestone Hill :) I've been to every Pennsic since XXII. I've been baked, broiled, boiled, watered, fried, flooded, drenched, and everything in between. And I look forward to going every year... it's all what you make of the situation.

Lake Serengeti , Pennsic 33, was my first Pennsic. It was quite an introduction to Pennsic!

Ah yes, Pennsic 23. I still have mud from that one on my boots. I remember going to bed in a tent down in the swamp and waking up on an air matress that was trying to float away... We had beer for breakfast that day.

And don't forget the year after that, when the heat index was in the 100+teens almost every day. They canceled battles or moved them to the evenings. The water level at the Classic actually rose from all the bodies crammed in there.

Then a year after that was the straight line wind. The golf carts came around about dinner time and told us to put all fires out and batten down. I was on a corner pole of a large pavilion; we were all trying to hold it down. The party afterwards was memorable - if only I could remember it. ;)

                          Seriously, be prepared for everything!

Pennsic 24 was the creation of Midnight Madness...it was a desperate attempt from the merchants to get people to spend money. They created a monster that year for themselves.

Ahhhh, Pennsic. I'm ready to go now, please.

Ummm.... I remember going to Midnight Madness my first Pennsic, which was PW 21.... but back then it was a mad night of deals- I remember rolling dice to determine the price of a dagger.

33 was my first too....The last friday it rained so hard I had a stream running through my canopy. That year I had a tent set up for sleeping inside a canopy I could close off with sides. The water ran right under my tent. I could feel the squishy water/grass mixture but my tent was bone dry. Make sure you have a good tent. I have yurt now but I still take that tent and keep it in the truck as a back up just in case.

Funny thing is the next year I camped in almost the exact same spot and it was so dusty and dry most of the week that every thing was coved with dirt. some of that dirt is still on my canopy (we used it for shade) and the tarps of my yurt.

Now I have the urge to walk half a mile in the rain for a beer.....odd.

33 was my first year with my now-household down on Willow Point. We're kinda lucky, even though we're on low land...there's a slight depression in the middle of the camp, so while the rain comes running in, it also keeps running out into the lake (yes, our camp, a river runs through it).

That was the year that I came back late one night to watch our small fire, still lit, floating away.

32 was my first. I arrived for the second week and it rained and rained.... but then it stopped and the fun began.

33 was wet wet wet! Jimmy, I'm with ya on the squishy water/grass mixture streaming under my tent, but inside my tent was dry. I remember going up top for the Cure Salle and walking thru knee-deep water in some places. The Serengeti was a lake! It was amazingly ugly!

I was so cold that year, I used a cast iron frog with a tea light candle to warm my hands and feet before bed every night. I was not prepared with warm footwear so I went to Pillage Village and bought a pair of boots... I STILL have left over mud in them boots. That was also the year I discovered Sake and the fact that it was served warm was a bonus! Till I had 8 shots and got socked on Sake!! Oh boy!

You know it's almost Pennsic when all you can think of is Pennsic and you talk about it to everyone you meet! Tents are being built, signs are being carved and burned and polyed, piles start manifesting in a room on every level of your house, and you start laying out in the evil day orb so you don't turn lobster red on Land Grab day!

I'm so excited, I can hardly sleep! 22 days!! w00t!

I second what Diane and Summer said about Pennsic XXIII.... The 'Ghetti was the texture of chocolate pudding and I didn't have a dry bit of garb in my mundane "taco tent". And the ants found a wee hole in the floor (although I did have it up on a platform of pallets) and attacked my foodstuffs, and someone came by an' bumped into the wall of the tent, knocking 3 bottle of booze on my little bar over (with pouring spouts) where they emptied onto my 35mm SLR camera. :-P
But I still had a lotta fun! - Say, Hunter... - you anywhere around on this list? - 'member '23? ;o)

Having at the van... sounds like it needs maybe a gas tank and fuel pump. I dunno.... Sure ain't paying what the shop told me it would run. This might be a poser....

I remember 33 as well , I went to bed on my air mattress and woke up sideways in my tent with all of my belongings floating around me, my air mattress having floated up in the night , keeping me nice and dry until I rolled over and splashed into the water. It was like being asleep inside a giant water balloon that was half full , when they said that thing was water proof they meant it , stupid little land pimple Who knew that beautiful flat piece of land I pitched my tent on was a stream bed , or at least decided to be one after the rains that night.

I don't think I was so affected by that years rains though , because it was my first Pennsic , and I was so over whelmed , blown away , drunk, elated , giddy , happy , and just having way too much fun to notice. Of course I didn't have half as much stuff to get soaked then, an armor bag, a sleeping bag , the smallest tent in the universe and a couple of T tunics , whoo caaares hehe, there are belly dancers , and fighting and people giving me booze at every turn. I think I spent most of that year sleeping in an lawn chair once my tent got washed away, when I did sleep that is.

          I'm sailing away,
set an open course for the virgin sea.

'Cause I've got to be free,
free to face the life that's ahead of me.

On board I'm the captain, so climb aboard.
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore.
And I'll try, woh Lord, I'll try to carry on.

Sleep, O Babe, till the red bee hums
            the silent twilight's fall.
Aoibheall from the Grey Rock comes
            to wrap the world enthrall.
I'll envy you, my child, my joy,
            my love and heart's desire
            The crickets sing you lullaby
            beside the dying fire.
Dusk is drawn and the grain man's barn
is wreathed in rings of fog.
Siobhra sails his boat till morn
            upon the starry bog.
I'll stay with you till the faded moon
has ringed our clasp with dew
And weeps to hear this lullaby:

I sing this love to you.

You spend $405 on maintenance for your car and $660 on your Sig O's car for tires(he's driving his Ford Escape with the trailer, I'm driving my mini-van down with Minion) so you have peace of mind this years trip will go smoother.(Ask me about last years sometime!)

You get laughed at for proclaiming you'll be packed EARLY this year. (I try, it just NEVER happens)

You con your sister-in-law into taking you out to Joannes fabric and finding bubble gauze so she ends up agreeing to make you 2 new chitons when you see her for 4th of July.(We'll be seeing her on the way down to get them)

You start collecting all the "unusual" booze in your house to bring to parties.

You ask your sig O "Hey, are our SCA membership cards still in the glove box"? (the answer is yes)

You start checkign Tribes multiple times a day.

Your mundane calendar now has all the Pennsic parties you've been invited to written on it.

You start singing/listening to medieval music/sea shanties etc.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!!! T-minus 18 days.

Oh crap do I need to start getting organized.

Yeah this place seems to pick up right about now and then there will be about 10 of us still here until the second week of pennsic and then there will be two lost souls looking for us until after pennsic.

Normally I would expect to see much more newbie threads but perhaps some are right and Pennsic will be smaller and more hardcore Pennsic goers. I can't even find a decent list of parties for this year.

              See ya all soon.

i do hope to see other ships and carts and caravans on thee wind, with their rudders set for the pennsic lands... oh this is an awesome time... pennsic is awake and is calling…
