Can anyone make a recommendation for the IKEA slat bed bases? I'm considering ordering one to replace the plywood I'd been using for a bed base, but there are several models in different price ranges. Just wondering if any has any positive/negative reviews?

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:01 AMI'd heard some positive things on a few of the Yahoo medieval encampments and medieval woodworkers lists about using them but when I did my slat bed I decided to just make my own slats. Not having an IKEA around and the website showing limited info on the slats and teh beds kept me from buying. Beside most of them required a store pickup and could NOT be shipped. That turned me off too. Of course now shipping is sky high on bulky items so I'd not be buying anyway.
Of course I've not seen these beds or slats so that's all my opinion without seeing them. -

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:40 AMI would make CERTAIN that it's made form SOLID, UN-PRESSED or SECTIONED wood boards. Pine is OK, poplar is too, maple or oak of course then now - well... :-D
Anything else will end up in pieces before it's time and expense have been recouped. You can bet on it. Cheaply made, cheaply wearing.
Better off just building something from 1x4" pine boards from the local Home Despot. That way you can be sure to add extra clearance beneath (if you so wish) to have space to store plastic tubs in a manner like drawers for your garb n' foodstuffs and thereby be out of sight besides keeping you off the ground. Prolly cheaper too.
If I had a nickel for all the cheap, press-wood or plywood or compressed sawdust furniture that I see in the dumpsters after Pennsic every year...
- I'd be driving something newer, - you could bet on that. ;o)
Cheers and good luck with it! -

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:58 AMOh, not looking to buy an entire bed - just the slatted base to put on my existing bed frame. Rolls up into a nice, compact bundle that should be easier to haul...especially now that I'll need room for those shiney new pavilion poles!
The discription states "layer-glued birch." -

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 12:03 PMI think this year I will just go to the local thrift store and pick up a cheap bed. Make my own slats and put a futon mattress on it. -

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 12:07 PMFor that mater I can get a cheap bunk bed and use the top bunk for storage or put a fancy bed spread on the top to make it look like a canopy bed.

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 4:59 AMSiobhra,
That's exactly what we did for the first 4 years. Last year we retired it and I built a slat bed re-using some of the slats from the original bed and the futon mattress. Our camp mates use a Queen size bed frame they found at a Yard sale cheap. All hand carved and solid wood they got a steal and a beauty. They actually haul a real mattress and box spring too!

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 9:44 AMI made a slat bed top that rolls up like what you describe from pine 1x2's, a drill and some rope. I drilled 2 holes in each board, through the long way, one on each end. Then threaded the rope through leaving enough to tie the whole bundle up. The way that my bed base is designed the slats roll around those boards to make on neat bundle. We took it to Estrella and it worked wonderfully. -

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 8:48 AMThanks - I may just end up doing something along those lines, as Valentin is right about how high the shipping costs are on the IKEA slats. -

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 2:59 PMThose are nice. I think I can fabricate one for about half the price without the high cost of shipping....it helps to be handy and married to a handyman. ; ) And much easier to deal with than our stupid rope bed. I hated having to re-tighten the dang thing every other day.
I'd get a second opinion on those "glued-layered" birch slats. It sounds like they've created them out of thin layers of wood and pressed them into one board. SOMETIMES laminated stuff like that is pretty sturdy, but not always. -

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 5:32 PMAhhhh.... - didn't know exactly what you were lookin' for lass. Thought you were getting the entire thing new.
Birch is usually pretty decent stuff. Pretty strong and flexible.
Good luck with it! -

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 6:35 PMIf you make a habit of going to Lowe's and Home Despot go to the lumber section and look for their "cull" lumber. It is usually a cart or two full of lumber cut offs. I find a lot of three and four foot pieces of pine. And big squares of plywood. And it is all very cheap.
My tent is not on any tour. People don't put down money to see it. I want comfort. And I want it as cheap as I can get it. That leaves me with more money for gas and for 'shiny things' from the merchants.

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 6:47 AMWe have a queen size bed from Ikea, and we love it. but we take a rope bed that Fearg made to Pennsic. -

Re: IKEA slat platform for camp bed
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 1:09 PMI too have the Ikea bed, it is not bad, way better than just slats of wood as the slats act like springs.
