I started a new job this year and just received word I could go to Pennsic for a whole week. Well, that isn't what got me excited. It was a co-worker asking about it and I showed her a picture...then my mind started going....

I can't wait for Pennsic now...Of course I still have to pre-register, I need a new air mattress, I have to repair garb, take in garb, make new garb, whip out the pack list....WOOHOO!

Thanks for letting me share....:)

I keep getting flashes of Pennsic memories....walking around the lake at night, hanging out at the Cooper's store, etc.

Then I get all squiggly and can hardly contain my excitement, so I completely understand.

My boss says to me .. "You know that 2 week vacation I said you could take at the end of July beginning of August 8 months ago when I hired you... " "mmmmhhmmm" says I.... "Weell I don't know if I can really spare you cause I can't find people to cover your shifts like I promised in your original contract ". .....
        < INSERT UNCOMFORTABLE SILENCE>
"I suppose it will be hard for you then at the end of July beginning of August my good little false promise making ,drunk on power, moronic , simpleton ... " said I.... " because I won't be working for you anymore by then. "

See you all at Pennsic .... 8)

Oh Bjarn, I might be right behind you! I've had my vacation on the calendar since January with no objections. First time I'm planning to attend the entire two weeks...and I've invested in a brand spanking-new pavilion that should be arriving in about three weeks.

Then my job duties were redefined, and now I'm supposed to be one of several other people who can back up one of the other women in my department (who has never in the past, by the way, had me to back her up - I'm an extra back up who's picked up lots of her crap duties). She also plans to take a week that overlaps with Pennsic.

Our boss had a freakin' FIT last week when I was out a day and a half for NOWM, when she was also out...despite that also having been on the calender since January. Said we need to plan better next time, and that this can't happen again. Read: he can also back her up and doesn't want to be bothered.

He hasn't figured out yet the week-long overlap coming up, but when he does, I've no doubt he'll tell me I have to cancel my plans (she has more seniority than I).

My answer will be simple: "I will not be here during those two weeks. Whether I'm not here because I'm on paid vacation or because I've been fired matters little to me at this point, given how you and this company have been keeping me in limbo and jerking me around for the last two years. But either way, I won't be here."

I almost hope it happens. It's so delightful to watch these corporate types get that blank, vacuous, unbelieving stare when someone actually tells them "no"!!

Excellent reply to a sucky situation Bjarn. I was once told days before Pennsic that I couldn't go. I told them that on the Monday after, I would show up ready to clock in. If they found someone more willing tolerate their crap while underpaid, I'd walk back out.

I've also once been told that I'd have to be on call, and would need to drive home on occasion, any time of day or night. I told them they would have to pay a taxi, or wait for me to sober up most of the time. They said I would need to stay sober throughout Pennsic just in case. How does management become so detached from reality?

Oh, fantastic comeback!!!!! And you wouldn't be the only person I've known about who was willing to quit their job for Pennsic's sake.

Missing last year is sure making me nuts for Pennsic this year. A couple weekends ago I was at an outdoor event for feast and it was beautiful. Everyone lined up at the tables in garb and gear - I was so in the moment.

Then I got some garb that was being given away. I got two chemises and a bodice for my daughter. Don't you just love it when clothing doesn't go out of fashion? :)

Last weekend I went through all my daughters garb and made a list of what she has and what she needs in order to make complete outfits. Thank goodness a lot of the stuff from last year was grow-able so not so much to sew this year.

Then there's my son who needs everything since he was born during last Pennsic. I have the bed stuff to finish up and I'm packing the kitchen stuff since I had the gear out for the feast. It's amazing how all my aluminum tankards are gone. This year I'm making my new ones with a red star.

    Oh so much to do...

I've got tons to do. I'm sure my fingers will be bleeding by the time I get to troll. I haven't been in two years and I'm crossing my fingers that nothing bad happens...again. Deaths in my family have a tendency to happen in July/August.

I miss the nightlife at Pennsic. Where everything looks magical in the firelight, even a ground pimple...well, maybe. LOL
But mostly I miss my friends.

      ditto Bjarn. Nice call.
I've been going for the past 3 years and my boss knows its either gonna be my 2 weeks vaction once a year or a 2 weeks of joyful unemployment before lookin fer a new job.

Luckily for me my boss is really cool and deals with it, but I've worked a few jobs that woulda finked on me at the last moment and say well we can't spare you, tuff luck.

I had a job like that once. I told them I had a week vacation planed for a specific time when i was hired. It got to that point and the manager said "well you have not earned a full week off yet, you have to be here a year". I told him "he can pay me or not but I am taking the week which has been planed and ok by his boss when I was hired." It has always been my policy that time off was more important than money.

By the way I am totally psyched for Pennsic. Just have to turn the rope bed into a slat bed and I will be all set. I already started buying and freezing food.

Once again we got smiled upon at Burning Hand. I am going to go grab as much free lumber out of an old woodshop Saturday morning.
Ummmmm aged hardwoods. Then in the afternoon, we will fill a couple pickup trucks, and a trailer with free lumber given to us by somone who was given fourteen 30 yard dumpsters worth of it as a tax write off. I now see 3 tents, plus a plethora of other things being built in a frenzy.
I am even going to make another bench for my power tools from that one.

As far as the job front goes, my husband does this. "I have a two week religious retreat every year, I am in charge of my group there, and it is already paid for and non-refundable, so, I will not be here for (insert dates)." As our land agent, yes, he is required to be there for the full 2 weeks, shhhhhhhh to all will give the "note of proxy" thingy.

Works everytime. : ) We're not really telling a lie, to us, Pennsic is a religion unto itself.

And yes, he does work for a huge corporation, you know the kind, the one's that most likely buy and sell your mortgage.

This year, he's leaving while the project he's on, 5 years past due and over budget goes live. Better yet, a lead software tester for it.

Nope, we just can't be reached.

Doesn't anyone in management take a vacation? Did they never work for a living? It always amazes me how stupid they can become. Happy workers are productive workers. If you give me my time off I give you more of my time later.

Unfortunatly, while I can get the time off from work...and get paid for it....several personal and family problems will keep me away from Pennsic this year. Oh well, there's always next year.

              ;-)

My favorite was leaving my previous place of employment.I got up in the morning as usual had my coffee then called work.I told them I wouldn't be in today. When asked if I was taking a vacation or personnel day I responded with. Why don't you put me down as "I Quit".After a bit of stunned silence and stuttering my foreman said he'd have the plant manager call me when he came in.I told him fine but that I probably wouldn't be changing my mind.11 years in some F---ked up factory and I get hired elsewhere at twice the rate. There was no sense putting in any notice as they always let everyone go that did.And since I was already hired elsewhere and scheduled to start in 2 weeks, well why not.

Are you kidding? The 2 weeks after the 2 weeks notice are the most fun you'll ever have at Work! It gives you 2 weeks to say all those things you couldn't say for fear of getting fired! Good times!

This will be my ninth Pennsic. I've always managed to get the time off for it, (or most of the time) but I've never been paid. All you peeps with a paid vacation are soooo very lucky. I change my job too often to get the hours... trying to collect some overtime now is my only hope.
