Sleeping arrangements

OK I have been sleeping on futon mattresses on a variety of bed frames for a number of years at pennsic. on this most recent trip I began considering less bulky alternatives to a futon mattress. I have never had any luck at all with air mattresses (they always seem to spring a leak on me.) This got me to thinking about asking others who camp at Pennsic. What do you sleep on? How easy is it to transport and care for?

I am specifically interested in mattresses here. I already have a good bed frame design I have refined over the years... but I would really like to find something less bulky and comfortable as a mattress.

Here's what I used, and it ROCKED for sleeping. I might even say it was comfier than my bed here in my house -

    www.campingstation.com/super-...59.html

This is the Ledmark Super Jumbo Cot. It is almost as big as a double size bed.

I added a basic camping pad from Walmart and a twin size Memory Foam 3" thick pad. Covered the foam with a queen size fleece blanket, done. No sore back, no deflated mattresses, slept in till around 11 AM most mornings.

The only thing I MIGHT do in the future is buy another setup, get a piece of plywood and make it a semi-king sized bed =)

At any rate, I highly reccomend this setup. The bed folds down into a dufflebag you can toss in the trunk, the pads fold up very compactly. Setup for the bed takes maybe 5 minutes at most.

My ideal is to have a single air mattress with a three-inch memory foam topper on top. It allows me to use a single air mattress instead of the double high and they seem to hold up better. If there is a bit of deflation due to weather changes, the memory foam helps to alleviate that. It has been working well for me for a couple of years.

After years of air mattresses I got a futon which I have used for two years now. I don't really like either one. The air mattress pulled the heat out of the body on cold nights and the futon packs down and is not much better.

Next year I plan to put the futon on top of an air mattress.

I have used the XL cots available from Bass Pro Shops, but dont feel they are comfy after about Day 5. Now I use this bed-height airmattress:

        tinyurl.com/qle5yq

The bummer is they no longer make the King size one, Queen is the largest. These have lasted 4 years so far (for Pennsic, and numerous other trips and houseguests!)

This year I put a down feather mattress topper on it and it was even better :-)

We pulled all the heavy cotton batting out of a futon mattress, and replaced it with a couple layers of eggshell foam stuffed right back in the same cover. Now I can fold the mattress and carry it around with one arm. It's very warm, and it compresses far more than when it had cotton batting. (though nothing like a folded air mattress)

It never ever goes flat. I'll pack less beer and food before I ever deal with that again...

Plus, if it ever reaches 0 degrees at Pennsic, I'll unzip the end, and crawl between the thick layers of foam like a Taun-Taun...

I wonder if Grims new foam mattress smells like a Taun-Taun?

No, but I once shared an apartment with a room-mate, and his couch did. I once saw him finish a plate of chicken wings and then set it on the floor. When I suggested that he clean it up, he reached down with his foot, and shoved the plate under the couch.

Where it clanked against a few other plates...

This idea has merit... That is one of the complaints I have always had about the futon mattress is that it is so damn heavy. Replacing it with a couple layers of foam so that it compresses more and is lighter might just be the trick.

I should have had you try out my bed. Alamanda/Super Jen did. (I just started a good rumor, didn't I?)

We have a wood bed from with wood slats. We used to use a futon but, I agree with you, that they suck in so many ways. The past two years we've used an air mattress with a temper topper. I've been quite comfortable with it. We might be doing foam next year to see if we like that better.

Oh, and if you know of anyone in the Detroit area who wants to buy a homemade queen size slat bed, let me know. We may be having to move within the next year and I need to start ditching things.

This year we finally gave up on air mattresses and brought a real bed. Metal bedrails with a solid layer of 2x10's for a base, and a real mattress on top. Granted it's bulky, but for two weeks it's totally worth it. It was so comfy the first few days I couldn't sleep because I was used to being folded in half by an air mattress at War.

Of course I live 25 minutes away from War, so travel is not that big of a deal. In fact, we made two trips up on Land Grab to accommodate the bed and all our other stuff. For longer traveling distances, I like the layers of foam inside a futon. Put the futon on the bottom of your vehicle, and pack on top of it. If you need it, place the foam on top of a cot.

Hmmmm... your bed was nice and cozy Karlana!

I usually put my air mattress on my rope bed with a flannel duvet cover around it. The only problem is the current air mattress is just a couple of inches too big for the bed. This tilts up one side which is not so bad when it's just me but not for two people (not that that has been a problem the last few Wars :- |)
