So quiet....

It's 3 weeks to Pennsic. Usually about this time, the Pennsic tribes are wild with "what am I going to wear" and "how do i.." and "safety at night Oh Noes!" and other conversations. Seems very few people are around this year!

Is it going to be a dead year?
Is there a new social place for Pennsic peeps?
Has the economy cut most people's internet off?
Has the world ended since I left the mainland in March?

Tribe's instability has a lot to do with the quiet, I think. It's gets a bit old, not being able to log in for days at a time.

Ditto though - if there's another hapening place for Pennsic talk, where is it?

Several people have suggested facebook, but when I look there most of what I see is drama-blog, "you go girl", sexygrl69 would like you to look at pics of her at this link, "how you doin'" shallowness. True dreck and social trivia. Maybe I'm not digging deep enough to find the relevant intelligent conversations?

Maybe people just found other stuff to do? It's probably a combination of factors.

There is a "Vulgar Unicorn" Emergency Site on yahoo groups that was set up in case Tribe shuts down, but it hasn't really been needed. Tribe goes down, then comes back. I think people are just tired of the inconsistency.

As far as war goes, I haven't seen the pre-reg numbers, but I know of several camps that have half the people they did last year. And these aren't transient camps, but established camps with consistent members. I fear the economy may have an effect on war this year, whether it means fewer people, smaller parties, or a quieter war, I just don't know. I think that some camps are going to opt for invitation only parties to reduce the costs and problems involving huge gatherings.

Sorry if I got a little off topic.

I'm really not going to worry about it. I plan on having fun no matter what :-)

what ever-the numbers, its going to be a rocking time... its the friends and family all being able to come together and share their joy... :)

i've been a little quiet-er lately because i'm so buzy at work and at getting the gear together... but i can't stop smiling...
i just can't wait to see everyone who can make it to the pennsic

....i've got to start working on my primal howl... :)

bummer....I hate smaller Pennsics. Our camp has some Newbies in it so I just don't know. I think people are not using tribe as much anymore and that is a big factor in our perception. I dont use it as much as I once did and I have a big list of friends who dont seem to be on much anymore either.

Maybe we just don't have as many new people on here, so all the "how do you/what do you/Oh My God Only Two Weeks To Go and I've got no Garb!" conversations have been done so many times that we aren't talking about that stuff so much any more.

I know our individual camp is up in pre-regs this year, though we have more 1-3 day campers and day trippers than in the past. But our land block as a whole is down by quite a bit. I'd be interested in the pre-reg numbers, just out of curiousity.

i havn't seen block assignments yet, but i know my group is the same size its been for the last few years. The economy is bad but some things are still doing well, cheap vacations being one of them.

I'm on FB and there is a Pennsic group and such but it doesn't really have the activity level or discussion structure as Tribes.

      Rowan,

I have noticed the relative quiet as well, but I think that may be deceptive.

I think that The Great Tribe Suckage is a big part of it. I just get really, really frustrated with it.

I also think that a lot of people are still concerned that they wont be able to go. This year, a lot of folks are living hand to mouth.

But, I also think that there is a whole lot of energy building up behind that dam, and when it goes, I expect that it will go big.

Don't worry about the block assignments, there is always a problem with it. That's the thing about volunteer labor. It also always works out, mostly. That's the thing about Pennsic.

Well, I logged on today and it is like all hell broke loose. LOL.

I think part of it has been the tribe buggy-ness part of it. I think the other is that we have virtual presence everywhere and become accustomed to starting things a little late.

I'm just glad to see traffic picking up!

Yep, I was starting to wonder about it too. I think it's just a combo of all the factors mentioned already: tribe suckitude, no newbies to ask questions, bad economy cuts attendance, etc. etc.
I kind of miss the random newbie questions though...they were fun.

But I'm totally psyched and hopping around in excitement!! I'm not having to build a yurt this year, and i've actually got enough garb. So I'm making small improvements to my existing garb and the yurt. Finally got around to painting our bedframe and the tono for our yurt.

its been a little strange for me as of late...

i think about the pennsic stuff for hours going to and from (and being at) work...
...only to have about 15 minutes of real time @ home, to try and do all of the pennsic things my mind is dwelling on...

but oh well, its all coming together :)

I finally put a hole in my roof to vent it. I have been living with out one becasue I was worried I would mess it up and have to make a new roof. It's done and all set. The other little projects went well. Still it is very quiet here and even the Facebook pensic pages are not too full of chatter. I just hope everyone decides at the last minute to show up. Even last year there were big open areas on blocks that used to be full so if anyone is lurking just show up to pennsic and get a great camping spot.

We have 19 people pre-regged in our camp this year--up quite a bit from last year, when we had about 12, but some of them may not be able to attend.

Also, block assignments are out! I will be camping with House Gallowglass again, and we are in N03 again. I hope we get the corner of St Lawrence and Sedalia's Way again, it was wonderful. We'd sit in the morning and watch the fighters march by, all crisp and energetic and singing--and then in the afternoon, trudging along, helmets in hand, tired and hot.

WulfDen seems to have a normal amount of Pre-Reg's according to the Chieftain -

The local SCA group will be sending about the same or a few more to their camp up on old Tuchux Hill again as well. We gots lotsa newbies itching to see what Pennsic's all about.

What I HAVE seen however, has been a trend of the past number of Wars is that the numbers are up next to the years I had started going (back @ P-22) - but a number of the types o' peeps attending have changed. Fewer "down n' dirty" tent-hopping partiers who are there to see how long they can stay awake and how much booze they can consume - as opposed to those who want to get to bed in time to get up for that class they want to attend or to drag their poor butts up into range of the evil glowing orb and stand in a helm all afternoon - whilst beating and being beat upon by others with the same bent.
Me? I'm with the first lot. Not to say that there's anything wrong with the latter. But it's just not my cup o' G&T, and it does seem to be that there are more of the latter these days. Maybe it's the "condom generation" attending in increasingly overwhelming numbers or something? Youngin's "saving themselves" for marriage? I dunno.... (lol) ;o)

Speaking of Youngin'... Whatever happened to him?

I've noticed the difference too. There has been little talk of War even here, where all of us have gone for almost 30 years. I have noticed a lot of life changing events happening to my usual War friends that will definitely affect their hype for War. There have been babies born, family and friends dying, jobs gained and lost, and it all seems like it has happened at a very rapid rate lately.

I've also been feeling the economic crunch - I call it I Don't Have Time to Make Money Because I Have Too Much Schoolwork - but there's no way I'm going to let it bother my War. No money for leather to make new garb? No problem! I've made three fringe belts, two coin belts, and three new tops this year from leftover scraps I didn't even know I had, old garb I didn't use, and a few really shiny things from a brief bounty around War Practice. The crafty frenzy doesn't have to end just because you're broke! I still have a leather jacket and two leather skirts to rip up and make other stuff with, not to mention a 50% off coupons to fabric stores. Life is good.

I'm not concerned about the size of parties or how many people can fit around a campfire. I just want to have a good time, get busy when I want to, and get lazy when I want to. I'm looking most forward to lounging around camp, hanging out with the Drunk by Noon Club, and not worrying about anything. You don't need huge numbers or lots of hype for that. We're all professional Pennsicgoers by now - we know the routine.

It may not be that no one is here, just that we have nothing to say.

I also noticed that there used to be a number of references to surfing at work, which I don't see anymore. I'm wondering if, in this economy, people are not goofing off as much at work. (don't want to provide an easy reason to let you go, when they're downsizing everywhere)

Add in Tribe unreliability, and the fact that other social networking sites are more phone friendly, (though less intelligent-discussion friendly) and the fact that the economy is down so people are moving, getting new or second jobs, and some are cutting back internet access I'm sure.

It's understandable that traffic here is down. The question is: will it pick back up when the economy does? I think some, but I think that alternate social networks and phones will then pull a bit more. To be fair though, we've mostly lost the folks who wrote short text style replies to that avenue anyways.

                Lol.
