Ok, so have you started your Pennsic Pile yet? Has it been assembled for some time now? What's gone missing? What do you have more of than you thought?

I dragged everything out this past weekend (that's how I celebrated Father's day I suppose - lol), and now it looks like a camp store has hurled all over my mancave! It's a good mess though - it indicates that Pennsic is creeping everso closer. Sweet!

after the event this weekend i pulled everything i took out and put it on a pile and will start adding to it. That and i've started some prep work on my home for pennsic.

Absolutely - I'm determined to actually get some sleep the week before Pennsic and not have to take a full 8 hours running errands and loading the car before I leave. Projects are underway and, happily, minimal this year. Except for garb...that's a never-ending pile in and of itself.

I have the same plans--to do most of the errand running and shopping at least a week before i leave. here's hoping it works out for us!

I've got my Pennsic bins in my spare bedroom and have gone thru them - I realized that I do not need to buy ANY camping gear this year which is totally amazing - I mean, it's only taken me 5 Pennsics...geez. : )

WOOOO HOOOOOOOOO !!! See ya'll on Zero Night !!

At Pennsic I make a list of everything which must be replaced, fixed, made, or bought by the next Pennsic. The things which require repairs are not put away until all of the work is complete. I have a big box in the garage which goes on top of my trailer. It contains all of my Pennsic specific stuff. In the past I used to take a week preparing for Pennsic. This mostly involved making new stuff. Now I work on new stuff year round. Last year for the first time I bought food, hooked up the trailer, loaded it, and left all in the same day. And I didn't forget anything! I have a good list I print prior to the event. If my computer ever goes down before I print the list, I am totally screwed.

I just have a Pennsic closet, contains all the necessary gear. When its time to go, just unload the closet into the car =)

I have plastic storage shelves which I throw everything on just to get a look at what I'm bringing. I also have a packing list which I need to print out. I've already started collecting things and putting them on the shelves. Garb is hung up in one my closets. I have notes from when I returned from last Pennsic of what I need to pick up and ideas for this Pennsic. I have a to-do list as well so I'm not doing things at the last minute...of course I probably will be, but one can hope.

haha I hear ya on the packing list. I almost forgot tent stakes once =)

Ive modified my Pennsic packing so much to the point that I went from filling a sedan for Pennsic to a SUV to a cargo van and now Im back down to a 4-door sedan. I've got it so fine tuned now, that you wouldn't be able to guess I was going to Pennsic. Lots of space saving going on, and that includes the tent and bed =)

Ok, step 1, rethink your tent.:

            - How much time, besides sleeping/having fun in bed do you spend inside your tent? Do you need much else than a cooler, a place to sleep and space for garb/armor/archery gear, etc? If you're not trying to turn your tent into a home, there's a really neat, period-ish solution, www.canvascamp.com/

I have a Sibley 400 Deluxe. It looks a little like a yurt and a little like a bell wedge tent, but there's a lot of space in there. The best part, the groundsheet is 1- waterproof, and 2- attached to the sides of the tent. Less critters crawling in, ZERO water getting in. A Sibley 500 would easily accomodate a queen size bed, 2 clothing chests, 2 coolers, a table and 2 chairs. The best part about these tents, they fold up into a duffelbag that you can stow behind your driver or pasenger seat of your car. THe poles break down to fit inside the duffel bag.

Ok, tent issue resolved. Next, your bed.

            2- Rethink your bed

There's no way to keep period and compact in the same sentence when it comes to beds. The best you can do is get a slat bed that breaks apart into a stack of lumber. On the non-period side, we know that air mattresses suck at pennsic, so if they can be avoided, the happier we are. Outside of a bulky futon couchbed thingy, you might have to give up on the "queen size" camping. SOme good options are a Swedish Folding Cot with mattress - www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs...goryDisplay , or a regular cot with good support - good support emphasised. What you can do to add comfort is get a twin size memory foam pad, roughly about $30, and rolls up into a spot in the back seat. Gives a little extra comfort on a cot. If you insist on "going queen", an option is to get 2 single cots, push them together and use 3-4 slats of plywood under the memory foam, lengthwise, covering both beds to disperse the weight equally.

A note on using memory foam - it collects morning dew. wrap it up/cover it with fleece blankets to keep your bed dry

3 - Rethink your eating habits.

If you are on a camp meal plan, eat at least one meal in the food courts, how much food do you really need to store in your tent? A cooler is important, so I'm not saying to get rid of it. But 1 cooler and 1 large air-tight plastic tote should be enough for your cold and dry foods.

4 - Rethink everything else that goes into the tent

Do you need the wardrobe closet in the room, or can you live your week out of a plastic tote, garb-wise? The less "tertiary" furniture you bring, the emptier your car is, and the less there is to pack.

            Here's what I bring:
            1 Sibley 400 Deluxe tent
            1 twin-size camp cot
1 twin size memory foam roll (3 inch thick)
1 42 QT Coleman Extreme cooler
            1 walmart/ikea popup clothes rack
            1 snack table
            1 foldable camp chair
1 medium plastic tote for food
2 small plastic totes for camp accessories (flashlight, batteries, etc)
            archery gear (bow, arrows)
HW fighter gear (shiel, armor, sword , helm, etc)

Fits pretty well and I'm not cramped at all, in the car or in the tent. I can get the tent up in 10 minutes, unpack in another 5, set up my living environment in another 5, 20 minutes from arrival and Im off to town to do my food run =)

Even if I upgraded to do something about going queen size, Id go with a Sibley 500 deluxe, and use the plywood as mentioned to link two cots together, plywood can rest very easily on the seat (or be purchased in town and discarded at the end of pennsic), and the sibley 500 wouldnt be dramatically bigger than the 400. Still would fit well in a 4 door sedan. As it is now, I can pack for Pennsic and see out of ALL my windows =)

Those tents look pretty fantastic. I've been on the look-out for a more modern tent for mundane camping and for my son to use at Pennsic. Thanks for posting this.

Not a probs. They're really awesome tents, I've been through a few panther pavillions, and these tents are by far more comfy (on top of easier to pack) If you want to check it out at Pennsic, Im on the corner of Myfan and Abandon Hope, with the Greater Freehold of Rozakii (big yellow and black tarp at our site, E23.

D'ner - Nope, the Sibley tents are designed to have a forward leaning A-Frame entrance, so it pitches the rain off to the sides. So, the rain wont come in unless you leave the tent flaps open =) The one area that makes the tent distinctly not period is one of its saving graces - full zippered door to floor connections. Close those up for the night, and your tent will stay nice n dry =)

I have started the food pile as this is my first Pennsic in 13 years that i'm not on a meal plan. I have tuna, ramen, crackers, boil in bag spagetti, iced tea, and other odd stuff piling up on the table in my kitchen. I have a box of camping odds n ends I need to find in the basement somewhere.

Next up is garb hunting through the laundry room, figuring out what garb I won't/don't wear anymore(and am offering to sell to newbies who need stuff) then the "search for shoes" starts.

But. I have a brand new Panther Bell wedge(trimmed in gorgeous dark purple) that my husband bought himself for weekend trips that *I* get for Pennsic. I think this may be the first time there has been a period tent pitched in Revelwood too.

            I've gone into packing mode...

Already had one SCA camping event a couple weeks ago. Got one more in two weeks, so the camping gear is already either in my car or in the box o camping gear.

Garb is really my only project yet to be finished. Did a full inventory and tossed what was beyond repair. Now I've got piles... good to go, repair, turn into something else, and fabric to be made into garb. Plus a full garb inventory typed out of all this too....

Errand list is made too, it'll be added to as it gets closer but it's not looking too bad. Been doing this long enough that it's just the stuff that needs to be replaced or bought new (like food).

I have a master packing list that I've establisted over many years so at least I don't have to worry about whether I forgot something I always use... theoretically, if it's on the list I'll remember it.

...an arisol can of cheeze is also fun...

              and some chicken-in-a bisket crackers...
...funny thing, they don't taste like chicken...

Eeek...time to start packing for Pennsic and I haven't finished unpacking from Gulf War!

What I take to Pennsic is less than what I take to Gulf War because I drive there. I fly into Pennsic so I have to beg, borrow, and steal space from friends who are driving. However, we are getting a storage unit this time so I'm going to leave my nice platform bed there this time and build a new one when I get back. That will be one less thing I have to find someone to take for me next year.

Everything is still on the trailer. I just have to get out the garb bins, wash everything again and put it back. Wash out coolers, throw in a 12 pack and some snacks for zero night and we're off.

Well, my Pennsic packing is all done. Of course, I left my house this past weekend for an extended visit with the family prior to Pennsic so I was somewhat forced into it. Also, all my gear is now in a pile in my Mom's garage while I visit. I also had to cut way back on what I brought in order to save some money on the gas mileage, so it should be an interesting time.

Yeah, I hear you there about the whole Jen thing. My "handle" here on Tribe used to be Super Jen until I got to Pennsic one year and no one called me by my SCA name. I decided I should change the username here and that may help. And yes, I'm going to be at the Howell Balloonfest today.

We set up our pavilion this morning so we could start working on some engineering that we've needed to do for the past 2-3 years. When we ordered it (a 16 x 16 Regent with 7 foot walls) Cowboy suggested D rings in the center inside of each wall. One of today's tasks was to find a way to push those walls out - one wall always sags no matter what we do. We wound up taking a 10 foot round pole (like a closet pole though I think this was a stair rail) and cutting it down, putting cup hooks in each end, and then running it into those D rings. We've got a rope holding it up in the center - and we will NOT be hanging anything from the pole.

We also got a 10 foot piece of plastic gutter to put at the door to help with runoff that comes from the dining fly when it rains. I made a gutter system the last Pennsic involving a rolled up tarp that worked well but we want something a little less ugly.

Only a few more small things to do to the pavilion this week including the curtain for the doorway and the flap to cover the back door and we'll be all set.

Don't get me wrong - the regent's a great little tent. We just need to adapt to it. :)

I get to pack all but the garb that needs fixed, which blessedly there are only a couple things, and anything new I make before War in it's box today.

Everything else lives in the trailer year round and gets used fairly often so I know it's in perfect condition.
