Drag Race at War - Final Update.

topic posted Mon, July 21, 2008 - 5:04 PM by  freiman
Gentles,

This is the final update for the Drag Race at war.

Please spread this information as widely as possible. I will try to get the Independent to publish the information on this function, but they may or may not publish it.

There will be a drag race at war. This will be a function to raise money that will be donated to the Women's Center of Beaver County. The Women's Center of Beaver County is in no way associated with this endevour, and probably has never heard of it.

The idea is this. One Wednesday of War Week at Pennsic War 37 (August 6th, 2007) there will be a race. This will be a walk/run along a predetermined route with a five dollar entry fee. Each runner is required to wear clothing that is inappropriate to their gender. In the interests of maximizing donations Kilts are considered inappropriate for both genders. You CAN wear them. They count.

The Race will begin at the top of the hill in the parking lot shortly after dark. There will be a table or blanket there, as well as a sign in sheet, and a donation box.

The route will be down the main road from the parking lot, down through the main serengetti encampment, up horde hill, through the Confed encampment, across a foot bridge, and into the Clovenshield encampment.

Dreadlord Nissan Maxima of Clovenshield has pledged umbrella drinks for all runner who complete the course.

The fastest runner will be named "The Pennsic 37 Protector of Women". the runner (or walker) who raises the most money will be named "the Pennsic 37 Champion of Ladies".

Because the term "registered sex offender" is hard to wash off, all participants are required to conform to public decency laws.

Because the route is irregular, and the roads are rough, all runners and walkers are encouraged to wear good, safe running shoes. Sorry, Boys, pumps are right out.

Freiman - sorry I haven't been able to help pre-Pennsic - didn't know what I was getting into and I've been training for a new job. But I will be available to assist on the 6th if you still need help. I've spread the word and will keep telling folks about it til they tell me to "shut up, already!"

And I'll donate $1.00 for each entrant who does START the race in pumps, and $5 for each entrant who runs the ENTIRE race in pumps (/platforms/stilettos/ or similar inappropriate footwear).

I'll be offline til next week when I get my work laptop plugged into Mystic Mail.

Did anyone see if the independent published anything at all about the race?

Actually, there was nothing at all in the independent about the race.

So, for a sort of advertisement, we marched to the site, from the high meadows, singing "I feel pretty, I feel pretty" which is a surprisingly lovely song, when performed by baritones and basses.

We raised 378.45 cents for the shelter, and delivered the money , along with a bunch of pictures. Apparently, there was a lit of laughter.

Ok... I totally looked up the lyrics just so I could post them on here.....

Now imagine a bunch of Pennsic-clad men strolling down the street singing this....

          I feel pretty,
          Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty, and witty and gay,
          And I pity
Any girl who isn’t me today.

          I feel charming,
          Oh, so charming--
It’s alarming how charming I feel,
          And so pretty
That I hardly can believe I’m real.

See the pretty girl in that mirror there:
Who can that attractive girl be?
          Such a pretty face,
          Such a pretty dress,
          Such a pretty smile,
          Such a pretty me!

          I feel stunning
          And entrancing--
Feel like running and dancing for joy,
          For I’m loved
          By a pretty wonderful boy!

ROFL!!! Sorry, just had to put that awesome image in your head!!!

        Nicolaa here, from the Independent:

We didn't even know about it.

I loved the Drag Race at my first couple of Pennsics (early 20s) and had I known that it was going on, we would have sent someone out. I had gotten a little busy before War and hadn't checked tribe recently, so I missed the announcement here.

No results were reported to us (nor was any story submitted).

If you do it again next year--please let us know!

Malcomb from Little India came in third among the runners but collected the most contributions. Other than that I don't know who was where. The whole thing was sort of thrown together under the radar with quite minimal organization, all by word of mouth (other than the posts here on Tribe before we all showed up at Pennsic). Malcomb wasn't even sure it was really going to happen until the afternoon of the race.

            The race was a success.

Malcolmb of Little India was named "Pennsic 37 Champion of Ladies", Bryce of Southern Wood was named "Pennsic 37 Protector of Women", and we raised 378.45 $(US) for the women's center. Tualaith of Omega Company delivered the money on Tuesday of the week after war.

Apparently, she also took along a bunch of print outs from pictures, and there was a lot of laughter.

As for the organization, I am sorry that I fell down on that. I had some helpers that were unable to make it at the last second, and the Independent didn't run anything on it. I submitted one story after the fact, and my housesister submitted one before, but neither one ran. To counter this, we did a "Parade" through the streets, foodcourt, and one royal encampment singing "I feel pretty", which, seriously, actually has some nice overtones when sung in a bass/baritone arrangement. We had about twenty five runners, but I have few pictures. If anybody actually had pictures (and a LOT were taken) Please send them to me.

Because people set their personal dignity aside to help a good cause, I refuse to make the razzing worse by posting those pics, but it would be fun to have copies.

I am not sure if tribe will let me do this, but here is a thumb to the copy of the receipt.

If you decide to organize it for next year I'd gladly poke the men of BOTH my households into giving it a go. At least ONE of the two groups has certainly done sillier/weirder things.

                  Jenna,

I have found that when I am involved, Pennsic doesn't quite do sequels well, but I will be coming up with something new next year. Really, if I try to repeat something, it just sucks. But my personal "Knight in Shining Armor" fantasy just doesn't work for me unless I do a charity thing, so I will try to come up with something fun. It will probably be for the same charity. Protecting women from people who would do them harm really appeals to me.

The Women's Center would love it if somebody would do the drag race for them next year. The Center needs the money. Ono of the top items on their "Wish List" on their website is "Bus Tickets". Here's the link.

                  womenscenterbc.org/

With Greyhound charging about seventy bucks to go anywhere (It has been a while since I lived in the 'States) we raised enough to get five people to safety. Two mothers and three kids? Picking up the drag race would help the center a lot. It would be worth doing, if anybody wanted to pick it up.

I also need to reiterate that I am not affiliated with the Women's Center in any way.

                  Thanks,
                  f

                    Freiman,

I don't think I 'm the one to pick it up, but I hope someone does! (I recall Drag Races to benefit the Chirurgeons from my first couple of Pennsics)

Let us know what you've got in the works for next year though!

                    Good luck!
